Does the town feel welcoming? Are there enough kids in the area to make it not seem like a ghost town in winter?įinally, I know that Saugatuck in particular leans fairly liberal, but what's the year round population like in those parts? My family is liberal, non-religious, and works in the arts, so while I get that it's the Midwest (we live in Indianapolis, after all), I'm also hopeful South Haven/Saugatuck might be on the more liberal end of small town life. Related to the school question, do the towns feel like fairly close-knit communities? I grew up in a fairly small tourist town in New England, and loved living in a place full of familiar faces, so I'm curious of the general vibe of the town (especially during non-tourist season). What's the educational landscape look like in South Haven/Saugatuck?
How are the public schools in the area, and are there any private, non-religious options nearby? My daughter goes to a private preschool/elementary school here that seems similar to the Kazoo School in Kalamazoo, though that looks to be an hour away and probably not feasible. We have a 3 year old and one on the way, and my main question concerns schools. My family and I are considering moving to the South Haven/Saugatuck area (we currently live in Indianapolis), and I'm hopeful that someone semi-local can shed some light on a couple questions.
